Oddanchatram sits at the foot of the Palani Hills in Dindigul district, which makes it a very convenient starting point for two of Tamil Nadu's best-loved group destinations: the Murugan temple town of Palani and the hill station of Kodaikanal. Both are an easy trip on paper — but with a family or a larger group, a few practical choices decide whether the day feels relaxed or rushed.

Distances below are approximate road distances from public travel sources. Please check your exact route on a map before you travel.

How far are Palani and Kodaikanal from Oddanchatram?

  • Palani is roughly 28 km from Oddanchatram — a short drive that is easy to fit into a morning.
  • Kodaikanal is roughly 90 km away, and a good part of that is hill road, so it takes noticeably longer than the distance suggests.
  • Dindigul town is about 29 km away, which makes it easy to combine with our Dindigul sightseeing guide.

Palani: plan the temple visit first

The Dhandayuthapani Swamy (Murugan) temple on the hill is the main reason most groups visit Palani. A few things help the visit go smoothly:

  • Go early. Mornings are cooler and the queues are usually shorter than later in the day.
  • Expect crowds on festival days and weekends. Festival periods such as Thaipusam bring very large crowds, and the roads fill with walking pilgrims — start earlier and allow extra time to park and reach the hill.
  • Check temple timings and rules (dress, footwear, mobile phones) before you set out, and tell everyone in the group.
  • Plan for the older and younger members. Decide in advance who will climb and who will use the other ways up, and where the group will meet afterwards.

Keeping the whole group in one vehicle means one drop-off point, one pickup point and no one waiting alone with the bags.

Kodaikanal: allow a full day, start early

Kodaikanal is cooler than the plains and its popular spots are close to each other: Kodai Lake, Coaker's Walk, Pillar Rocks, Guna Caves and Bryant Park are the ones most visitors plan around.

  • Leave early so you arrive before the day-trippers and the afternoon mist.
  • Carry a light jacket — it can be noticeably cooler and damper than at the foothills.
  • Mind the ghat road. Hill roads have sharp bends. Anyone prone to motion sickness should sit toward the front and have water and snacks ready; plan a short break rather than pushing on.
  • Avoid driving the hill road after dark if you can, especially in rain or mist.
  • Weekends and school holidays are busy. Traffic into town slows down; build in buffer time for the return.

Can you do Palani and Kodaikanal in one day?

It is possible to see Palani and Kodaikanal in one long day, but for a family or older travellers it is tiring and you will rush both. A more comfortable way to plan it:

  1. Day one: Palani temple in the morning, rest in the afternoon.
  2. Day two: an early start for Kodaikanal, back by evening or an overnight stay.

If you only have one day, choose one destination and enjoy it properly.

Why travel together in one vehicle?

For a trip like this, a single comfortable vehicle with a driver who knows the hill roads takes a lot of stress away: no convoy of cars, no one hunting for parking in Palani or Kodaikanal separately, and the group stays together. When you send us your trip details — number of travellers, dates, pickup point and how many days — we can tell you honestly whether our Force Urbania suits your group, and help you plan the day.

Quick checklist

  • Pickup time and point agreed with everyone.
  • Temple dress and timing rules shared in advance.
  • Light jackets, water, snacks, motion-sickness remedies.
  • Buffer time for weekend and festival traffic.
  • A plan for who climbs and who waits at Palani.

Frequently asked questions

Is Oddanchatram a good base for visiting Palani?

Yes. Palani is only around 28 km away, so you can visit the temple and return the same day without a long drive.

How long does it take to reach Kodaikanal from Oddanchatram?

Plan for a long morning drive. The distance is roughly 90 km, but hill roads, traffic and weekend crowds mean it takes longer than the kilometres suggest.

What is the best time to visit?

Early mornings suit both places. For Kodaikanal, the cooler months are pleasant, while mist and rain can make hill driving slower — check the weather before you set out.

Can I book a vehicle for a group from Oddanchatram?

Yes — share your dates, group size and pickup point and we will help you plan the trip. See also our guide to planning a group road trip and our notes on airport and station transfers.
